New Fish Found
However, in a fresh update, Scientists from the University of Western Australia made an unexpected discovery while exploring the seafloor in a deep trench in the Pacific Ocean south of Japan.
A species of fish was found deeper in the water.
At a depth of 8,336 meters (more than 27,000 feet), the researchers studying the Izu-Ogasawara Trench were able to film an unknown snailfish species of the genus Pseudoliparis.
A few days later, in the Japan Trench, the team caught two fish in traps at a depth of 8,022 meters, setting a record for the deepest catch.
These snailfish, Pseudoliparis belyaevi, were the first to be collected from depths greater than 8,000 meters, and had previously only been seen at a depth of 7,703 meters in 2008.
The researchers made the discovery in September 2022. They announced their findings on Sunday, April 2.
