Christopher Nolan recently spoke out about the Oppenheimer early reviews, revealing that audiences were ‘devastated’ by the show.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biographical thriller film Oppenheimer is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons.

Based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 biography American Prometheus, the film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with an ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh.

Universal Pictures is set to release Oppenheimer in the United Kingdom and the United States on July 21, 2023.

It is Nolan’s first film not to be distributed domestically or internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures since Memento (2000), as well as his first film to receive a R rating since Insomnia (2002).

Oppenheimer early reviews

In a recent interview with Wired Magazine, the renowned filmmaker opened up about Oppenheimer and revealed the audience’s shocking reaction to an early screening of the film.

“Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated. They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done,” revealed Christopher Nolan, who opened up about the early screening of the film.

“It is an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I showed it to a filmmaker recently who said it’s kind of a horror movie. I don’t disagree,” Christopher Nolan said.

Nolan added. “Oppenheimer’s story is all impossible questions,”

“Impossible ethical dilemmas, paradox. There are no easy answers in his story. There are just difficult questions, and that’s what makes the story so compelling. I think we were able to find a lot of things to be optimistic about in the film, genuinely, but there’s this sort of overriding bigger question that hangs over it. It felt essential that there be questions at the end that you leave rattling in people’s brains, and prompting discussion.”
