Drake ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ is 1 year ago today, Meaning of the Song Lyrics explored
Drake’s track “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” featuring Lil Durk, was released one year ago today. What’s the meaning of the song lyrics?
Drake’s song “Laugh Now, Cry Later” features Lil Durk. On August 14, 2020, Republic Records and OVO Sound released it as the lead single from Drake’s forthcoming sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy.
Laugh Now Cry Later Meaning Drake Song
Laugh Now Cry Later, according to Genius Lyrics, is about Drake’s high-life lifestyle and a relationship, with the hope of living in the now and dealing with sorrow and difficulties later.
Some speculated ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ is like a victory song for Drake to celebrate surviving Kanye West and Pusha T’s failed attempt at destroying him in 2018.
“He reflects on his successful lifestyle while taking shots at them. In the first verse, Drake makes it known that he’s tired of constantly beefing and wants to move on from it. The chorus is completely dedicated to Kanye West.”
Speculations further said “Drake was mocking Kanye West and trying to say that he’s “crying” because of bad situations affecting his life at the moment.”
See Another Viewpoint of the Lyrics
- “Tired of beefin’ you bums, you can’t even pay me enough to react” – is probably referring to Kanye West and Pusha T’s G.O.O.D. Music.
- “I took a half and she took the whole thing, slow down, baby” – It appears like he’s referring to xannies. Drake raps about taking half a Xanax tablet to sleep on a flight on Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.”
- There was the beef in 2018 when Pusha released ‘The Story of Adidon’ and Drake sarcastically sent Pusha and his G.O.O.D. Music label a $100k invoice for “promotional assistance and career reviving” as he promised in his previous retort ‘Duppy Freestyle’ ( “Tell Ye we got an invoice comin’ to you, Considering that we just sold another 20 for you”).
- “When he tell the story, that’s not how it went, Know they be lying 100%” – The first probable tale / lie here might be a reference to the feud between Pusha T and Drake in 2018, when Pusha T accused Drake of employing ghostwriters on the single “Infrared” ( “It was written like Nas, but it came from Quentin” ).
- Despite Quentin Miller, Drake’s alleged ghostwriter, denying the story, Pusha T released ‘The Story of Adidon,’ in which he rapped about Drake’s secret ‘BABY’ (“You are hiding a child, let that boy come home, Deadbeat mothafucka playin’ border patrol, Adonis is your son, And he deserves more than an Adidas press run; that’s real”).
- “Anytime that I ran into somebody, it must be a victory lap” – The entire song is basically a victory lap for Kanye, but I believe he’s referring to the fact that he’s been able to overcome a number of beefs over the years, including Pusha T since 2011, Chris Brown in 2012, Common in 2012, Tyga in 2013, Meek Mill in 2015, and most recently, Pusha T.
- “I know that they at the crib goin’ crazy, down bad, What they had didn’t last, damn, baby” – It appears to be a low blow, given that Kanye was suffering from mental illness, which is ripping his marriage apart. But it’s also possible that he’s just talking about Kanye being angry about how life isn’t working out for him right now without mentioning his mental condition.
Dave Meyers directed the official music video for the song, which was released on August 13, 2020.
Drake ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ Lyrics
[Chorus- Drake]
Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we cry, but I guess you know now, baby
I took a half and she took the whole thing, slow down, baby
We took a trip, now we on your block and it’s like a ghost town, baby
Where do these n***as be at when they say they doin’ all this and all that?
[Verse 1- Drake]
Tired of beefin’ you bums, you can’t even pay me enough to react
Been wakin’ up in the crib and sometimes I don’t even know where I’m at
Please don’t play that n***a songs in this party, I can’t even listen to that
Anytime that I ran into somebody, it must be a victory lap, ayy
Shawty come sit on my lap, ayy, they sayin’ Drizzy just snapped
Distance between us is not like a store, this isn’t a closeable gap, ayy
I seen some n***as attack and don’t end up makin’ it back
[Pre-Chorus- Drake]
I know that they at the crib goin’ crazy, down bad
What they had didn’t last, damn, baby
[Chorus- Drake]
Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we cry, but I guess you know now, baby
I took a half and she took the whole thing, slow down, baby
We took a trip, now we on your block and it’s like a ghost town, baby
Where do these n***as be at when they say they doin’ all this and all that?
[Verse 2- Lil Durk & Drake]
I’m in the trenches, relax
Can you not play that lil’ boy in the club? ‘Cause we do not listen to rats
We in Atlanta, I buy her a wig, she tellin’ me Tae is the best
Point at the n***a who act like a killer, but you only one for the ‘net
I’m like DaBaby, I’m not just a rapper, you play with me, you gon’ get stretched
Ooh-oh
Bring Drake to the hood, surround Drake around Dracs
Even though I got a case, I’ma do what it take
And I never been embraced
And the money’s hard to make
So I bet they on they face right now
[Pre-Chorus- Drake]
I know that they at the crib goin’ crazy, down bad
What they had didn’t last, damn, baby
[Chorus-Drake]
Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we cry, but I guess you know now, baby
I took a half and she took the whole thing, slow down, baby
We took a trip, now we on your block and it’s like a ghost town, baby
Where do these n***as be at when they say they doin’ all this and all that?
[Verse 3- Drake]
When he tell the story, that’s not how it went
Know they be lyin’, a hundred percent
Moved out the Ritz and forgot ’bout the Bent’
Valet just called me to tell me come get it
Knocked that boy off and I don’t want no credit
If it was me, they wouldn’t regret it
Left me for dead and now they wan’ dead it, yeah
Heart is still beatin’, my n***as still eatin’
Backyard, it look like the Garden of Eden
Pillow talk with ’em, she spillin’ the tea
And then shawty came back and said she didn’t mean it
It’s hard to believe it
[Pre-Chorus- Drake]
I know that they at the crib goin’ crazy, down bad
What they had didn’t last, damn, baby
[Chorus- Drake]
Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we cry, but I guess you know now, baby
I took a half and she took the whole thing, slow down, baby
We took a trip, now we on your block and it’s like a ghost town, baby
Where do these n***as be at when they say they doin’ all this and all that?
